    Overall many very good points and observations made over the 6 parts, but I find that even where the ideas are sound, their implementation over the last few decades has left a lot to be desired. Given the context of the time this lecture was made, the sentiments are very understandable, but we must not forget the biases that influence those sentiments also exist. I will also note that Russell makes a few false statements, possibly for the sake of brevity, but false never-the-less. For example, when he says that animals do not make provision for winter as humans do, he is ignoring animals like squirrels and bears who either make provision for winter in stores of food or stores of fat. Russell asserts only humans do this, a falsity. I also think that Russell's assertion that only government can provide security, justice, and conservation, is very much in need of critical scrutiny in that he makes an absolute assertion which is vulnerable to refutation by anecdote. I think his assertion here is, in fact, not a true assertion and that it can be quite readily refuted if a person wished to do so. I'm quite disturbed by the surety with which Russell believes in the role of government in society. I recognize he does provide caveats, critique and warnings to his positive advancement of the role of government, but I still find his affirmations concerning. Perhaps Russell lived in a time when government was more competent and less corrupt and malign? I think Russell is definitely worth studying and I find his articulation of ideas quite pleasing to listen to. I find he seems to have an apparently good character and is obviously a well-read and very intelligent man. I think it is wise not to place him, or any person, on a figurative pedestal and I question if his ideas are truly possible to implement and if so, if the cost is too high. The most questionable aspect of this lecture is Russell's advocacy for a world state. Even as qualified by him in this lecture as "only" being responsible for a global monopoly on weaponry and a force for the prevention of inter-state warfare, I still find the proposition to present significant dangers and to be, quite honestly, verging on the naïve. As Russell is clearly a man of significant learning, high intelligence and long years at the time of this lecture, I find his advocacy for a world state cannot be dismissed as a product of naivety. I therefore find that Russell, as a product of his time, is likely trying in his advocacy for a world state to perpetuate empire through a formulation he characterizes as benevolent. In my view, the only way a world state could seem to be desirable to a person or group is if it were assumed that the control of that world state would be in the possession of that person or group. Would Russell be as keen on the idea if the world state were to be in the control of the Russians, Germans, French or Chinese? I think this betrays his true motives.

    Some very good points made, many that appear to have been ignored by Russell's successors. ...or perhaps Russell's public commentary only represents a PR element and in private, among his peers in the elite, a different plan for the future of humanity has been devised, one far less benevolent in its conception, as is suggested by actions that have unfolded post-Russell. One thing seems clear, the post-WW2 world seems to have been dominated by Russell's thinking and the thinking of those who share his worldview. The subduing of Germany and the end of the kind of Germanic thought that produced a counterpoint to British thought in the pre-WW2/1 era has led to an insufficiently critiqued, lopsidedness in European philosophizing. While I think it's fair to say that the ideas advanced by Schopenhauer and Nietzsche leave many things to be desired, it seems to me that without the kind of Germanic thought that was prominent in pre-WW2/1 Europe to counterbalance the thinking of British Liberalism, we end up with an ideological dominance that is insufficiently tempered by credible and critical opposition. It seems that the Anglo-American successes of the mid/late 19th century and the 20th century over Russia and Germany and to a lessor extent the 18th century successes over France, have left the Anglo-American establishment in a position of almost uncontested intellectual, military and economic dominance over Europe and the European diaspora nations. In a sense, the USA is rather like the ancient Rome of today and the British establishment are like the ancient Greek intellectual establishment post Roman conquest. Without much competition to stimulate new ideas, the Anglo-American establishment is becoming intellectually bankrupt. No wonder they are seeking input from sources of "diversity." Unfortunately for them, their precious "diversity" wont be able to save them as the degree of complexity and expanse of operations are far beyond the conception of the average European mind to contend with, let alone the average "diverse" mind. Can't get certain East-Asians involved too much either as they will seek to supplant Western hegemony. If only the elites of Judeo-Anglo-American establishment weren't possessed of such supercilious arrogance, they might have looked closer to home for recruits to assist in their endeavours. At least Plato conceived of elevating worthy minds into the "Golden class," whereas the current elite seem to have little belief that such worthy minds even exist.

    ...and indeed we have created precisely a new prison for ourselves through the tyranny of enforced equality, the pseudo-religious fervor for scientism and the fanatical elimination of all distinctions to the point that we ignore the empirical, punish the truth tellers and deny each other the very liberties we sought to extend to all peoples. The path to Hell is pathed with good intentions and if good intentions were ever extant in the machinations of Russell and his fellow elites, they have led us to a precipice of fascistic ideological orthodoxy where the new sins are the highlighting and articulation of difference, even when that difference can be repeatedly demonstrated. The very empiricism that Russell seemed so fond of is now shunned when it fails to confirm the biases of orthodoxy. Empirical measurements, no matter how rigorous or scientific in their acquisition and analysis, are rejected if they show any deviation from the pseudo-religious tenets of "Diversity, Equality and Inclusion." Perhaps if Russell had lived long enough, he would have been able to curb the excesses of neoliberalism and globalism so that these ideologies were restrained within boundaries that kept them from becoming oppressive, authoritarian and anti-empirical. In his absence, it appears lesser minds have failed to keep a true heading.

    Some very good observations and very good points, well articulated. The problem of excess accumulation of power in progressively fewer hands has continued unabated. The attempt to form a global state has progressed and the formation of a pan-Western civilizational cultural consciousness has taken many steps forward over the last 60 years. The problem I see, that isn't mentioned here, is that national and even imperial governments have demonstrated many failings, often only limited by their scope of power. A global state with a global government will have effectively unlimited scope of power and therefore unlimited scope to destroy mankind through error, folly, arrogance and corruption.

    ...and hence is produced the social engineering that today is carried out by the same tiny elite that Russell belonged to, complete with its criminalization of speech and thought, denying people fundamental liberties on the basis that they vibrated the air in a way that the elite disapproves of, or otherwise hold views the elite dislikes. ...we might ask ourselves where does the desire for all human endeavours originate? We must answer, in nature. Is the desire to control, to shape societies, to socially engineer, rooted in anything different than the will to dominate that drives man's destructive activities? No. Russell's impulses, his cognition, his motive energies, root into nature. If the intellect is the servant of the will, then it can be said that all intellectual activity is driven by the same will that drives all other striving in human life. Russell, afterall, is not advocating for the ordinary person to shape social engineering ideology, policy or practice, but for the intellectual elite, him and his in-group, to do so. The violent acts of the world can be said to be just as much a product of a will to dominance, a striving to witness the manifestation of will within perceived external reality, the use of power, as is the desire of intellectuals to shape ideologies and influence societies through intellectualism, via science, politics, economics, philosophy and so on. The method of dominance is changed, the end result, the satisfaction, the fulfillment of the mind witnessing its impact on the external universe is the same. The intellectual's ideological influence, or the savage's violence produces the same outcome, the expression of will within external perceived reality, the witnessing of individual power within the world. Is Russell wrong? No more than the savage is wrong. Both are human and both seek to witness the manifestation of their power within the external world. The methods may differ enormously, but the fundamental outcome, internal power made external, the will made manifest in the world, is not different. Intellectuals are still subject to the human condition.

    Social Cohesion requires us to work together. When I look at the USA, they are "rugged individualist" as part of their Neo-Liberal ethic. Some of them say that society does not exist. I find them "selfish" in their insistence of their Constitutional Individualism, and their singular "rights". Sadly religion has muddled their world.

    Russell is correct that, without a government using the monopolly of force on a society, men would have never built gargantuan useless structures, that served no purpose, like the pyramids. People who are not under the rule of a government would instead use their time, ressources and energy to build things that are useful to them. Whenever Russell tries to make an argument for the government, it becomes an argument that the government is more than useless, it is detrimental for humanity.

  • @gatovillano7009
    @gatovillano7009 11 місяців тому

    Russell is on to something when he says that we shouldn't remove danger and competition in our society. However, he failed to provide a constructive way to use these evolutionary behaviors. The exploration of space would be a good drive for humanity. There is ample room for competition and danger in space. And unlike war, this would advance humanity. It would provide more room and resources for humans to thrive. This brings me to what I dislike about Russell. He replaced religion with the government. Trading one evil for another is not progress. We will never explore the stars while under the thumb of the government. The government has no incentives to send people on other planets because it has no control and cannot use people when they are out of its reach. Thus, the only logical conclusion is that we must evolve past the need for government.

    Science has for many years tried to disprove the Biblical Account of Creation Ex Nihilo, as Recorded in the opening Chapter of the Book of Genesis, the Infallible, Inspired, Inerrant Word of Almighty God. And science has always FAILED in their feeble attempts One very important fact has, and can never be answered by those who believe in the MYTH known as Evolution: WHERE did the very first form of life come from? If there is a "Big Bang Theory", then WHAT banged? WHERE did the very first element, atom, or whatever you may call it, come from? Without the God of the Holy Bible, and Its Teachings, there is no way to explain the MORALITY that exists in this world, like the wrongs of incest, adultery, homosexuality, murder, theft, kidnapping, fornication, etc, etc, which is ONLY to be found in the Holy Bible! No religion in this world, which are all human, ever says these and many other things, are WRONG and SINFUL! All legal systems that exist in this world, that consider these acts as unlawful, do so because of The Holy Bible saying so! These and others, are essential questions, which "science" can and never answer! Without the God of the Holy Bible, and the Teachings in the 66 Divinely Inspired Books in the Holy Bible, in the Original, there is NO possible human explanation for this universe that we live in! Now try and disprove these FACTS!!!

    Keep in mind that much of the anthropological and archaeological evidence Russell uses is outdated, but he still expresses remarkable insight. And after all, seventy years from now it's certain that our present understanding of the archaeology and anthropology of early humanity will also be outdated.

    Social theory without Christ in the center is in vain. Even Russell admitted that Ghandi could not have freed India from the Brittish if Brittain did not have a Biblical foundation. Neitsche had it right, saying that if you get rid of Christianity, you get rid of morals. Atheist comedian George Carlin said that our planet would be better off without people on it. The damnable part for atheists is that life does continue after the grave. God will judge the world in righteousness. If you are a good person, you will not have any problems. However, if you have lied, stolen, or used God's wonderful Name in disrespect, you will be rightly tried as a lying thief and a blasphemer. Unfit for the perfect social fabric of heaven, you would be cast outside with other lying thieves. Hell is torment forever; how could it not be? Yet, Christ died on a Cross so that we may know Him. Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

      Ken, not everyone requires a delusional belief in order to behave well. The most rational of us (A) won't believe in gods because we don't have reasonable evidence any exist, and (B) we're very strongly motivated to cooperate at the societal level (and also lower levels) because that's how you achieve the greatest well-being. So until you have strong, logical evidence of a god (and/or Christ being a god), you have nothing. It's just empty words that nobody (including you) should take seriously.

      @@majm9309 Thanks for writing. I am an A-Atheist. That is, I would like proof that the world was formed by natural processes. For example, do you subscribe to the atheism of Dawkins, Kraus, and Hawking? They claim that the universe came from nothing and that life came from non-life. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Please give me proof that matter in a tide pool became a cause-and-effect chain producing hula hoops, fried chicken, and a lava lamp. Is that how life works: leave something alone and miraculous things will happen? Really? I write these posts to warn atheists that there is an afterlife, that they will be called into account for every evil deed: every lie, every theft, every disrespect of their Maker. Hell is eternal and it is torment. You cannot say that I did not warn you! Yet, Christ died on a Cross so that you may know Him. Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

      @@kenshiloh The only way to show atheism (non-belief in gods) is irrational is to present strong, logical evidence of a god. If we have that, then atheism is irrational. Well I've asked many hundreds of theists for evidence of god, but many do what you're doing: they try to shift the burden of proof because they know they don't have evidence of a god. Well that's not how truth works. Knowledge of truth requires evidence, so if we don't have evidenc eof a god, we don't know one exists, and belief would be irrational. (Meaning non-belief is the rational position.) Science doesn't claim to know how the universe originated. But if you're just saying "the world" then you can look up the hundreds of scientific papers in the references section of "planetesimals" and "history of earth" to see the evidence proving how the Earth formed naturally. As for the origin of life, we don't know that yet (just like the origin of the universe). When science does have sufficient evidence there will be theories of abiogenesis and universal origins. Ken imagine Gary shows up to the thread threatening you with "Leprechaun Hell", which he says you'll go to if you don't believe in leprechauns. _He provides zero evidence of his hell or leprechauns._ Should you believe him? I feel like you're smart enough to see that Gary's position is non-evidenced nonsense (and it'd be worse if you asked him for evidence proving his position and he only tried to attack your position, right? Gary needs evidence his position is truth before anyone should take him seriously...right? He can't prove his position is true no matter how many other positions he proves are false (if we even assume he can prove them false).)

    • @kenshiloh
      @kenshiloh Рік тому

      @@majm9309 Why don't atheists have the burden of proof? For example, since we observe that matter cannot be created nor destroyed by natural means, that logically leads to a supernatural creation. That is perfectly valid evidence, rock solid truth. Yet, without God, you must posit that matter is either infinitely old (violating the second law of thermodynamics) or that matter came from nothing (violating the first). It is not that there is no evidence for God; you just do not want to believe in Him. You love your sin. You love being your own god, making your own rules. I ask you to strongly reconsider your views. There is an afterlife. If you go into eternity making your own rules, that is the 'morality' you will be stuck in forever. Think of the worst in human behavior and know that hell is even worse! Right now, as you read this, there are people being mercilessly tortured around the world. If you do not make peace with Christ, you better pray that there is no afterlife! Many of those same people are safely secured behind bars, yet in the next world, they will have the run of the house. Jesus said that there are 'torturers' in hell. No mercy. No release. No relief. Hell is torment forever. I urge you: do not play with fire! Yet, Christ died on a Cross so that you may know Him. It is so easy to verify if I am right. Pray, "Jesus, if the Bible is true, thank you for eternal life." Then trust that God keeps His promises. He always does! Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

    • @majm9309
      @majm9309 Рік тому

      @@kenshiloh Because most atheism is just non-belief in gods. That's not a claim. We don't claim gods do exist. We don't claim they don't exist. _We haven't seen a good reason to believe, so we don't believe._ Do you understand the distinction? If not: * I'm thinking of a claim that can be true or false. * Do you *(A) believe my claim is true, (B) believe my claim is false, or (C) have no belief about my claim?* * This isn't a typo or a trick question, I really haven't told you what the claim is, and so we're 100% certain you don't know my claim is true or false. Knowing those things would require either evidence it's true or evidence it's false. You don't have either (because you don't even know what the claim is). * So non-belief is the rational position. Imagine Gary the Alien simulates a universe, our universe, on a computer. Gary isn't a god, he's just some random alien. So the logical error you've made (by essentially saying you think either a god caused our universe or nothing did) is known as a *false dichotomy* where you present two possibilities like they're the only possibilities, when more valid possibilities exist. Those possibilities include non-intelligent causes to our universe too. Now when we simulate universes like Super Mario's universe, it doesn't necessarily have the same laws as our universe. (Mario's universe doesn't have thermodynamics.) That means we cannot know how reality works beyond our universe, if anything exists beyond our universe. So our knowledge stops at the big bang (which isn't the origin of the universe; the big bang is just the _earliest known moments_ of our universe; we don't have evidence of anything earlier). So when I ask you to reconsider your views, it's because I can keep writing a giant laundry list of logical errors your position is based on. Can you deal with those errors and/or describe evidence of a god that _doesn't_ commit mistakes like that? Because if not, that means you don't have a good reason to believe in a god. Why are you lying about me? I'm not a god. "God" is a word with a very specific meaning, and I don't match that definition. Not even close. Even when I run a simulation on my computer, I'm not a god. _I'm even a game designer, so I literally design universes._ But that doesn't make me match the definition of a god. So it is the fact that we don't have evidence of a god. You also don't have evidence of the many other claims you made, so maybe stick with trying to prove a god exists before continuing on to those other empty claims?

    It is my belief that if we introduced Mr. Russell to students starting in the 3rd to 4th grade and continued his talks.. though out their Jr and Sr high school years into their college years... we would change the whole of society forever. I can assure you, if you ask... 1,000 Americans between the ages of 10 years old to 30 years old, hardly a 1 would have any idea who he was... nor could they even slightly give us a single sentence.... of enlightenment. I am not judging nor belittling.. I am simply making a statement I believe to be factual!

    Granting modern man the facility to undertake adventure in travel, expedition and exploration, as well as in entrepreneurship, investment and in the endeavour of self reliance, are plausible replacements for the destructive effects of these driving instincts. It is the failure of our systems to free man from the shackles of financial servitude to become his own champion that destroys a man’s spirit. Because the instinct is not to seek enemies but to seek the means to survive. It is in THAT endeavour, that experience of the daily struggle to achieve security in old age, that is man’s truest driving force.

    I consider Russel's book to be something of a Logical Positivism technical demo. I think logicism is a bit hubristic in that it has it's own metaphysics capable of reading other metaphysical systems, so he assumes it must be something above metaphysics, but it isn't. It is a metaphysical system capable of transliteration because it is based on logic. That's impressive in it's own right, but hardly the Truth. But whatever I may think about Russel's metaphysics, it's impossible not to love him as a man.

    24:13 I know what he's trying to argue about, but this argument is kind of silly for one main reason: it's not one, single man killing 500,000 people. It takes many 1000's of highly specialized people to build an atomic bomb. It takes millions of people to support the 1000's of said, highly specialized people. It is likely more appropriate to consider that with the correct organization of millions of people, then we can build ***many bombs that can murder 500,000 people. He still has his mind set in the right area. We have means of destruction that are so ridiculously powerful we could nearly kill all of civilization in a few hours if we desired. I say nearly, because there will be post-apocalyptic survivors, and they will almost certainly rebuild civilization.

    It's too bad this man didn't live to be here and now, because he would have considered the biochemical mechanisms we discovered since he died, and the ones we continue to discover. I may not have the science yet to back it up, but I am nearly certain that biochemistry holds an answer for why people desire "thrilling" experiences. It's not only an emotional reason: that's the surface layer reason. We seek thrilling, possibly societally abhorrent behavior, because on a biochemical level the body is tracking levels of neurotransmitters. Are you feeling sad and depressed too much of the time? It's because your body's system is keeping score of serotonin levels, and it says you're too low. So you go do something thrilling (either attempt suicide or some other thrilling behavior), and you get a massive spike in serotonin or other neurotransmitters. Down to a biochemical level, the human body is keeping tally. Scientists are close to understanding it, and soon we will be able to modify/modulate the score by our own will. We already take control of it with medications, but I mean it will be a more widespread solution than medications. You can cry all you like about "SSRI bad" but I don't really care. My goal is a utilitarian utopia.

    Social cohesion has never been necessary for survival. Authority and the will it imposes only gives you the illusion that it is, while convincing you any alternative to a society is ludicrous. On the contrary, it is not ludicrous, it is merely not lucrative and takes away from the powers that be.
